Can You Use Two Messenger Accounts at Once on One Computer?

By ADSSPEED Team · Published · Updated · 5 min read

Can you stay signed in to two Messenger accounts on one computer?

Not through anything Messenger itself offers on a computer. According to Messenger's Help Center (read 3 October 2026), the Add or switch accounts feature is not available on computers but is available on mobile devices, and the Messenger desktop app for Mac and Windows is no longer available. What is left on a PC is Messenger in a web browser.

Meta's pages disagree on the address. The English version of its page on downloading Messenger tells computer users to visit facebook.com/messages; the Vietnamese version of the same page names messenger.com. Other Help Center pages still describe steps on messenger.com, and its sign-in page still offers a Keep me signed in box, so check which address works for you.

What does Meta document for each place you use Messenger?

Where you use MessengerWhat the Help Center saysBuilt-in account switching
Phone or tablet app (Android, iPhone, iPad)You can save different Messenger accounts and switch between them, up to five, following Facebook's name policies and authentic-identity standardsYes
Computer, in a web browserThe download page sends computer users to facebook.com/messages (English) or messenger.com (Vietnamese)No: the switching page says it is not available on computers
Messenger desktop app for Mac and WindowsNo longer available; some other pages, such as the one on notification settings, still list desktop-app stepsNot applicable

Meta's Android steps for adding an account are:

  1. Tap Menu, then Settings.
  2. Tap Switch accounts.
  3. Tap Add account, enter your details and tap Log in.

The same page says that if the option is missing you should update the app, and that people you message may see that your account was recently created. Where Help Center pages disagree, treat the one on downloading Messenger as the more specific about what exists today.

Why are two Messenger accounts really two Facebook accounts?

Meta's Help Center says your Messenger password is the same as your Facebook password, and that you need a Facebook account to use Messenger. A person who deactivates Facebook can keep chatting through a Deactivated Except Messenger Account (DEMA), and an old Messenger-only account has to be updated to a DEMA to keep working. Meta's Accounts Center pages name accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Meta accounts, say only one Facebook account can be added, and do not list Messenger separately.

So a browser that holds one Facebook sign-in holds one Messenger sign-in. Facebook documents its own switcher for computers: it keeps up to ten Facebook accounts in one browser, but only when several people have logged in from that browser. That page does not mention Messenger, so check what you see on facebook.com/messages after you switch.

What counts as a second device for Messenger chats?

Meta's page on end-to-end encrypted chats says you can use them from more than one device: install the app and sign in on each one. When you sign in on a new mobile device, earlier encrypted messages do not appear until you restore them, the other people in those chats see a notice that you are on a new device, and new messages then show on all your active devices. The page does not say how a second browser is counted.

For browsers, Meta's page on supported browsers lists Chrome and Microsoft Edge as supporting encrypted chats on messenger.com and facebook.com (the Vietnamese version also lists Safari). On another browser you may not see all of your chat history or be able to make calls, which matters when you choose a browser for each account. The restore step is explained in why Messenger asks for a PIN.

Which options exist for several logins on one computer?

OptionFitsWhat the sources say
The phone app's account listAccounts you own, used on your phoneUp to five; not on computers; at least one stays active
Facebook's switcher in one browserPeople who share a computer, each with their own accountUp to ten Facebook accounts; Meta's page is about Facebook
One browser profile per accountKeeping each sign-in and its browser data apartChrome Help says profiles keep bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings separate; see separate browser profiles for Messenger
Page access instead of a second loginA brand's or client's inboxEach person uses their own account with access to the Page; see Page inbox access
A private windowA one-off visitFacebook says private browsing can bring a security code back at every login

Profiles keep stored data apart; they do not give an account its own network connection. See what a browser profile is and how incognito differs from other tools.

What if switching or signing in does not work?

  • No Switch accounts option on your computer. That is what Meta documents. On a phone, update the Messenger app first.
  • You cannot add a sixth account. The page says up to five.
  • A second browser asks for a PIN. That matches the restore step Meta describes for a new device; see the sign-out guide linked above.
  • You use a Messenger-only account. Meta says you must update it to a DEMA; without an update within 90 days you lose access, and after a further 60 days the account is deleted.
  • The wrong account is open. Give each browser profile a clear name and colour.

Where ADSSPEED fits

If you manage several Messenger accounts you are entitled to run and want them signed in side by side on a PC, ADSSPEED can help. It is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles; every profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so one sign-in does not sign another out. A proxy can be set per profile or assigned to many profiles in bulk, profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, and profile data stays on your own computer. Android phone profiles are available for mobile apps on a PC. ADSSPEED does not change Meta's rules. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Facebook Messenger or Meta.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have two Messenger accounts?

Messenger runs on a Facebook account, and Meta's Terms tell people to create only one account, their own, for personal purposes. The Messenger phone app can save up to five accounts for switching, tied to Facebook's name policies and authentic-identity standards. A brand uses a Page and gives people access to it instead of a second login.

Can I switch Messenger accounts on a computer?

Not with a Messenger feature. Messenger's Help Center says Add or switch accounts is not available on computers but is available on mobile devices. On a computer you can keep each account in its own browser profile, or use Facebook's own account switcher, which Meta documents for facebook.com.

Is the Messenger desktop app still available?

No. Messenger's Help Center says the Messenger desktop app for Mac and Windows is no longer available. Its English page tells computer users to visit facebook.com/messages in a browser, while the Vietnamese version of the same page names messenger.com, so check which address works for you.

Can I open Messenger on 2 devices?

Yes. Meta says you can use end-to-end encrypted chats from more than one device: install the app and sign in on each one. On a new device you will not see earlier encrypted messages until you restore them, and the other people in those chats see a notice that you are on a new device.

How many Messenger accounts can I add on my phone?

Up to five, according to Messenger's Help Center. The page says to add accounts that follow Facebook's name policies and Community Standards on authentic identity, and that you can remove accounts you added, but at least one account must remain active.

Do I need a Facebook account to use Messenger?

Yes. Meta's Help Center says you need to create a Facebook account to use Messenger. You can then deactivate Facebook and keep using Messenger with a Deactivated Except Messenger Account, called a DEMA. Anyone who used a Messenger-only account has to update it to a DEMA.
