Is It Against Instagram's Rules to Have Multiple Accounts? What the Terms Say

By ADSSPEED Team · Published · Updated · 6 min read

Is it against Instagram's rules to have more than one account?

Instagram's own pages treat several accounts as a normal feature. Its Help Center describes adding and switching between accounts, with up to ten logged in at one time (read 3 October 2026), and the Terms of Use page sets no account count. What the rules prohibit is how accounts are used, and the sections below list those prohibitions with their sources.

Instagram's Terms of Use name Meta's Community Standards among the policies you can't violate, and the Transparency Center says those standards cover Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads. That is why some rows below cite Meta policy pages. Rules change, so open the linked pages before you rely on a detail.

Instagram does not require your real name. The Terms say you don't have to disclose your identity, but the registration information you give must be accurate and up to date.

Why the multiple-accounts rule gets misquoted

Be careful with the Meta policy that mentions multiple accounts. It is the Authentic Identity Representation page in Meta's Community Standards, and its bullet is about multiple Facebook accounts. That bullet sits in a list headed for Facebook, which also includes a single account used by more than one person.

The list that covers Facebook, Instagram and Threads together is different. It names accounts that belong to underage children, impersonating another person or entity, identity misrepresentation meant to mislead or deceive others or to get round enforcement, and names that break the Community Standards. So: do not quote the Facebook rule as an Instagram rule, and do not read the lack of an Instagram account count as permission for the behaviours in the table.

Personal, professional and accounts you handle for others

  • Account type is a setting, not a quota. Business and Creator are professional account types. The Help Center says you can switch back to a personal account or change type at any time. Switching a private personal account to professional makes it public, and switching back means you lose access to ads and may lose some tools.
  • Accounts for someone else. The Terms say you can't create an account for someone else unless you have their express permission. For clients, the cleaner pattern is that the client owns the account and gives you access, as the business access guide explains. The same ownership logic is described for ad accounts in the agency guide.
  • Logins. Because soliciting, collecting or using other users' credentials is on the prohibited list, hand access over through Instagram's own tools, not passwords.

What happens when a rule is broken

  • Terms of Use, section 6. Instagram can refuse or stop providing all or part of the service, including disabling your access, to protect its community, or if you violate the Terms or its policies.
  • Community Guidelines. The page says overstepping its boundaries may result in deleted content, disabled accounts or other restrictions. It also notes that from 12 November 2024 the guidelines moved to Meta's Transparency Center as the Community Standards, which cover Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads.
  • Account Status. On the computer, open More, then Settings, then Account Status. For professional accounts it lists removed content and features you can't use, and offers Request a review. The page says that in most cases you get a warning before you lose access.
  • Disabled accounts. A disabled account shows a message when you try to log in, and the Help Center says a review can be requested there. A deleted account cannot be restored.

A checklist to stay inside the rules

  1. Confirm who owns each account and keep written permission for accounts you handle for others.
  2. Give each person their own login or role. Never ask a client for a password.
  3. Do not automate account creation, or automate access to Instagram or collection of its information, without Instagram's express permission.
  4. Do not use apps that sell likes or followers, and never give your login to one.
  5. Do not buy, sell or transfer accounts or usernames.
  6. If an account is restricted or disabled, use the review route. Do not open another account to carry on.
  7. Re-read the Terms of Use and Community Standards now and then. This page was read on 3 October 2026.

If you think a decision was wrong

Use the in-product route: Account Status, then Request a review, or the review option shown when you try to log in to a disabled account. Make requests honestly and once. The Terms list misusing a reporting, dispute or appeals channel, for example with fraudulent or groundless appeals, as a prohibited act. If you are locked out for another reason, the sign-in checks guide lists Instagram's recovery pages.

Where ADSSPEED fits

ADSSPEED helps you organise accounts you are allowed to run: one browser profile per account, each with its own cookies, local data and settings, a proxy per profile that can be assigned to many profiles in bulk, and profiles you can open, stop and organise in bulk. It runs on Windows and macOS, and profile data stays on your own computer. It cannot change what Instagram allows, and ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram ban accounts for having multiple accounts?

The pages read for this guide do not list owning several accounts as a violation: the Help Center describes adding and switching between them. They do list impersonation, automated account creation without permission, buying, selling or transferring accounts, and creating accounts to get round an earlier removal. Consequences range from removed content and restricted features to a disabled account.

How many Instagram accounts can you have at once?

The Help Center gives a figure of ten accounts logged in at one time, and repeats it on its professional account page. The pages read for this guide do not state an overall cap on how many accounts one person may own.

How many Instagram accounts can you have per email?

According to Instagram's Help Center (read 3 October 2026), an email address can only be associated with up to five Instagram accounts. The page also says that if someone tries to use your email to log in or create an account, you receive an email about it.

Can you have multiple Instagram accounts on the same device?

Yes, Instagram documents it. On instagram.com you add accounts through More, then Switch accounts, and the Help Center says up to ten can be logged in at one time. Each account should be one you own or are authorised to manage, with its own login.

Why would multiple Instagram accounts get blocked?

The pages read do not name having several accounts as the trigger. Meta's Account Integrity policy does list accounts created or repurposed to get round an earlier removal, and accounts owned by the same person or entity as a disabled account, among those it may restrict or disable. The Terms also let Instagram end access when its policies are violated.

Can you create multiple Instagram accounts on the same device?

Instagram's Help Center describes creating a new account from the app or instagram.com, and says that if you use an existing Facebook or Instagram account to do it, both accounts go into the same Accounts Center. The rules prohibit creating accounts in an automated way without Instagram's express permission, and Meta's Spam policy bars creating accounts at very high frequencies.

How many business Instagram accounts can you have?

Business and Creator are professional account types, and the Help Center says you can switch back to a personal account or change the type at any time. The pages read set no separate allowance for professional accounts, and the ten-logged-in figure appears on that page too.
