X (Twitter)
How to Keep Several X (Twitter) Accounts Apart on One PC With Separate Browser Profiles
How do you keep several X accounts apart on one PC?
Give each account its own browser profile and sign in to one X account in it. Chrome's Help page describes profiles as a way to keep info such as bookmarks, history, passwords and settings separate, Chromium's documentation lists cookies among the data a profile holds, and Edge profiles keep their own browsing history and bookmarks. A sign-in made in one profile therefore does not show up in another.
X has its own switcher for several accounts in one profile, covered in multiple X accounts on the same computer. Separate profiles are the next step up when accounts should not share stored browser data. The X Help Center pages cited here (multiple accounts, sessions, password reset and login help) were checked on 3 October 2026, and X changes such pages from time to time. Use only accounts you own or are authorised to manage, and follow X's rules.
What a profile separates and what it does not
| Item | Chrome or Edge profile | Firefox container | X's switcher |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cookies and site storage | Separate per profile | Separate per container: cookies, local storage, IndexedDB and caches | Shared by every account added in that profile |
| Bookmarks, history, saved passwords | Separate per profile | Mozilla's list covers site storage only | Shared |
| Two accounts open side by side | Yes, one window per profile | Yes, in separate container tabs | No, you toggle between them |
| Computer, operating system, internet connection | The same in every profile | The same | The same |
A profile does not alter your computer or your connection, and it does not alter what X's rules allow. The difference between a private window and a profile is in antidetect browser, VPN and private window compared.
Set it up in Chrome, Edge or Firefox
Chrome
- Open Chrome, select Profile at the top right, then Add Chrome profile.
- Choose a name, photo and colour scheme. If you sign in with a Google Account, Chrome says bookmarks, passwords and settings can be saved to that account and used on other devices, so decide whose account that should be before you do.
- In the new profile, open x.com and sign in to one X account.
- Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the next account. Switch between profiles from the same Profile button.
Edge. Select the profile icon at the top right, choose Manage profile settings, then Add profile, then Add. Edge's page says you can sign in to sync your data or create a profile without your data. Switch with the profile icon.
Firefox. Mozilla describes containers as light, long-lasting contexts that keep sites apart. A container tab works like an ordinary tab, but the sites in it get their own share of the browser's storage. Check Mozilla's support site for the current steps to turn containers on.
Naming, hand-over and backups
Naming. Put the brand or client first, then the handle, then the person responsible, for example ACME / @acme_news / Linh, and choose a different colour for each client. Chrome lets you pick a name and colour scheme when you create the profile.
Hand-over. Hand over access, not a signed-in profile. Chrome's Help page warns that anyone with your device can open another profile on it, so only share a device with people you trust. For an account that belongs to a brand or client, use Delegate or Teams as managing X accounts as a team describes. If a profile of your own account was used by someone else, change the password afterwards, which X says ends other active sessions, and check Apps and sessions.
Backups. Chromium's documentation says each profile is a subfolder of the user data directory, which on Windows defaults to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data. The folder holds cookies, so treat any copy like a password and never email it. Chrome says removing a profile erases its bookmarks, history, passwords and settings from the computer, while the X account stays with X. Keep each account's recovery email address and phone number current, because X says a password reset needs access to them.
When ordinary profiles are not enough
| Signal | Why it hurts | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| More than a handful of accounts | Browser windows, names and colours stop being enough to tell profiles apart | A tool that opens, stops and organises profiles in bulk |
| An account should always sign in from one place | Every ordinary profile uses the computer's connection, and X says login alerts show an approximate location taken from the IP address | A proxy per profile; see proxy types explained |
| Several people need one account | Profile folders and passwords must not be passed around | Delegate or Teams |
| A task needs the X mobile app | A browser profile cannot run an app | An Android phone profile |
No setup can promise how X will treat an account. These changes are conveniences for managing what you are entitled to run.
If a profile misbehaves
- You are signed out each time the browser closes. X's login help says to make sure the browser accepts cookies. Check whether the browser clears cookies on exit, or whether you opened a private window.
- The wrong account is in the wrong profile. Log out, check the profile name, sign in with the right account and rename the profile. Do not repair it with X's switcher.
- X sends a login alert after a new profile's first sign-in. X says a first login from a new device triggers a notification. Follow the steps in it if the login was not yours; see why X keeps logging you out.
- Someone else used a profile. Open Apps and sessions in Settings and privacy and use Log out all other sessions.
Where ADSSPEED fits
ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles, so the routine above does not depend on windows and colour schemes. Each profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, which lets the X accounts you manage stay signed in side by side without signing each other out. A proxy can be set per profile and assigned to many profiles in bulk, profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, and profile data stays on your own computer. Android phone profiles run mobile apps on a PC. Setup is in installing ADSSPEED on Windows. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with X (Twitter).
Frequently asked questions
Can I use multiple Twitter profiles in Chrome?
Yes. Chrome lets you create several profiles, each with its own bookmarks, history, passwords and settings, so you can sign in to a different X account in each. Select Profile at the top right, choose Add Chrome profile, and name the profile after the account it will hold.
How do I switch Twitter accounts on desktop?
There are two routes. Inside one browser profile, use X's switcher: click your profile icon in the side menu, choose the more icon or the plus icon and pick Add an existing account. For accounts that should stay apart, use one browser profile per account and change profile from the browser's profile menu.
Can I have 2 Twitter accounts open at the same time on one PC?
Yes, in two separate browser profiles, one window each. X describes its own switcher as toggling between accounts, so inside a single profile you move between them instead of seeing both at once.
How do I log out of other devices after handing over a profile?
In Settings and privacy, open Apps and sessions and choose Log out all other sessions under Sessions. X also says that a password change ends your other active sessions, apart from the one you used to change it.
Why does my second Twitter account not load in a new browser profile?
A new profile starts without your earlier sign-ins, so sign in again from the login page and complete any check X shows. If sign-in keeps failing, X's login help suggests making sure the browser accepts cookies, clearing the cache and trying another browser. Removing a profile erases its saved data from the computer, but the X account itself stays with X.
