Can You Have Two Goodreads Accounts? What Goodreads' Own Rules Say

By ADSSPEED Team · Published · Updated · 6 min read

Does Goodreads allow more than one account per person?

Goodreads' pages give no number either way. The Terms of Use (revised 28 April 2021, read 3 October 2026) contain no sentence on how many accounts one person may hold, and the Community Guidelines set no number either. What the documents do rule out is using someone else's account, misrepresenting who you are, creating accounts to harass others, abuse features, get around the rules or sway ratings, and automated activity. Goodreads can also end or suspend access for any reason, so silence on a number is not approval.

What do the Terms of Use say about accounts?

The Terms put the second row in one line: "You may never use another Member's account without permission." They also bind you to the Goodreads Privacy Policy, the Amazon.com Conditions of Use and other rules posted on the site. This guide did not cover the Amazon document.

Which behaviours do the guidelines name as breaking the rules?

Community Guidelines

  • Giving a false picture of who you are, or opening accounts to harass other members, misuse features or sidestep the rules.
  • Artificially inflating or deflating a book's ratings or reputation. The page gives examples: accounts created to manipulate ratings, purchased reviews, and incentives for votes, likes or other actions.
  • Spam and self-promotional content.
  • The page asks you to report content that breaks the rules or contact Goodreads. It does not describe what happens to an account that breaks them.

Rating and Review Guidelines

Under the heading on what may affect visibility or lead to removal, Goodreads lists ratings that artificially push a book's average up or down, rating patterns that look automated or inauthentic, self-promotional and spam reviews, and undisclosed commercial or paid reviews. It says it may remove content or limit its visibility to personal profiles, and may temporarily limit ratings and reviews on a book where it detects unusual rating or reviewing behaviour.

Author Guidelines

The Author Program is intended for professional use. The page lists as rule-breaking: contacting members who shelved your book (treated as spam), mass friend requests, joining multiple groups only to post about your own book, and trying to influence reviews, including requiring a review in exchange. Paid and incentivised reviews are prohibited, and such activity may bring your account under review.

Where is "one person, one account" explicit?

In giveaways. The Giveaway Terms and Conditions have separate parts for print and Kindle giveaways, and both say the same on these points:

  • You need a Goodreads account and an Amazon account to enter or receive a prize. The print part names Amazon.com or Amazon.ca and the Kindle part names Amazon.com.
  • Each person and each household gets a single entry per giveaway, made with one Goodreads and Amazon account.
  • Robotic, automatic or programmed entries are disqualified. Tampering, breaking the terms and disruptive behaviour are further grounds.
  • Where several people share one email account, the authorised subscriber of the account used at the time of entry counts as the participant in a dispute.

The print part is open to individual legal residents of the 50 US states, the District of Columbia and Canada. So two accounts in one home entering the same giveaway is the situation this rule is aimed at, however many computers or browser profiles are involved.

What do the rules not say?

  • A number of accounts. None of the pages read sets one.
  • Merging or linking. The pages read are silent, so ask in the Help Center.
  • Personal versus business accounts. The pages read do not distinguish them. The Author Guidelines expect professional use of the Author Program, and the Author Program page says your login and password stay the same after approval.
  • A ladder of consequences. The Community Guidelines describe none, the Terms leave the choice to Goodreads, and the Review Guidelines name removal and limited visibility.

How do you stay inside the rules with more than one account?

  1. Hold only accounts you own or are authorised to run. Never use another member's account without that member's permission.
  2. Register each account with an email address that is really yours, since the Terms bar false email addresses.
  3. Keep each account honest: your own ratings and reviews, nothing meant to push a book up or down, no bought or sold reviews, and disclosure when a free copy came with a review.
  4. Enter each giveaway once per person and household.
  5. Do not run bots or scripts on Goodreads.
  6. Keep credentials private. If someone else has used an account, tell Goodreads promptly.
  7. Re-read the pages before you rely on them, because several carry no date.

What if Goodreads removes content or limits something?

  • A review or rating disappears or is hidden. The Review Guidelines say Goodreads may remove content or limit it to personal profiles. The Terms also let it remove User Content at any time.
  • Your access is ended or suspended. The Terms leave this to Goodreads and the pages read describe no appeal process. Use the Contact us form, topic My account, and keep the account's email address reachable.
  • You see rule-breaking by others. The Review Guidelines encourage you to report it, and the Community Guidelines say to report or contact Goodreads.

Where ADSSPEED fits

ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS for managing many browser profiles; each profile has its own cookies, local data and browser settings. For people who legitimately run more than one account, that lets every account stay signed in side by side. It leaves Goodreads' Terms and guidelines exactly as they are, and it offers no cover if a rule is broken. Profile data stays on your own computer. See what a browser profile is and installing ADSSPEED on Windows. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Goodreads.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have two Goodreads accounts?

The Terms of Use text read on 3 October 2026 contains no sentence on how many accounts one person may hold, and the Community Guidelines set no number either. They do prohibit accounts created to harass members, abuse features, get around the rules or manipulate ratings. Goodreads may end access for any reason, so check its Help Center before relying on a second account.

Can you have more than one Goodreads account for personal and work use?

The pages read do not separate personal from work accounts. They say you need a Member account for shelves, reviews and comments and that you answer for everything done under it. The Author Program page adds that approved authors keep the same login and password, so an author profile appears to sit on the same account rather than a second one.

Can I merge two Goodreads accounts?

The Terms of Use, guidelines and sign-in pages read for this guide say nothing about merging or linking accounts, so this guide cannot say how Goodreads handles it. Goodreads' Help Center is the place to ask, and its Contact us form has a My account topic.

Can two people in one home enter the same Goodreads giveaway?

The Giveaway Terms give each person and household one entry per giveaway, made with a single Goodreads and Amazon account. They also say that where several people share one email account, the authorised subscriber of the account used at the time of entry is treated as the participant in a dispute.

Can Goodreads suspend or delete my account?

The Terms of Use say Goodreads may permanently or temporarily end, suspend or refuse access without notice, for any reason, including a violation of the Agreement. The pages read describe no appeal process, so the Contact us form under My account is the official way to ask about your account.

Does Goodreads allow bots or automation?

The licence to use the service excludes data mining, robots and similar extraction tools. The Rating and Review Guidelines say rating patterns that look automated or inauthentic can affect visibility or lead to removal, and the Giveaway Terms disqualify entries made by robots or automation.
