WhatsApp Rules for Multiple Accounts: What Is Allowed and What Can Get an Account Banned
Does WhatsApp allow more than one account?
Yes, in the forms WhatsApp provides itself. According to WhatsApp's Help Center and Terms (read 3 October 2026), one phone can hold two accounts, and WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business app can share a phone if their numbers differ. The pages read set no total on how many accounts a person may own, but each account is verified with one phone number, and workarounds such as unofficial apps and automation are prohibited outright.
What the rules say, topic by topic
The Terms of Service page shows an effective date of 4 January 2021. The Business app and Business Platform terms show 23 September 2026.
| Topic | Status | What WhatsApp says |
|---|---|---|
| Two accounts on one phone | Allowed | Maximum of two, second needs its own number; no switching in the Business app |
| WhatsApp plus the Business app on one phone | Allowed | Both can run, each on a different number; one number cannot serve both |
| Your own account on linked devices | Allowed | Up to four, using the tools WhatsApp provides |
| Business use of the regular app | Needs authorisation | The Terms bar non-personal use unless WhatsApp authorises it; the Business app and Platform terms limit those products to business use |
| Bulk, automated or auto-dialled messages | Prohibited | Named in both the Terms and the responsible-use page |
| Creating accounts by unauthorised or automated means | Prohibited | Listed in the Terms |
| Unofficial or modified WhatsApp apps | Prohibited | The Help Center says they violate the Terms and can lead to bans |
| Impersonating someone | Prohibited | Listed in the Terms |
| Moving one account between devices again and again | Risky | WhatsApp says you may be blocked from re-verifying |
| Opening a new account after WhatsApp disabled or suspended yours | Not without permission | The Terms make that part of what you agree to |
The Terms also say you must not make the service available over a network where multiple devices could use it at the same time, except through tools WhatsApp expressly provides. Linked devices are that tool, so they are more screens for one account, never extra accounts.
Personal accounts and business accounts
- Regular WhatsApp. The Terms of Service bar non-personal use unless WhatsApp authorises it. Messaging for a company or a client belongs on a business product.
- WhatsApp Business app. Its terms ask a company to register with accurate information and a valid legal business phone number, to let only authorised individuals acting on its behalf use the app, to keep its credentials, devices and account secure, and not to use the app for personal, family or household purposes. They also prohibit spam and unsolicited communications, and require honouring requests to stop.
- WhatsApp Business Platform. Its terms have the company state that it will use the Platform solely for business, commercial and authorised purposes, will provide only account information associated with the company, and has not been previously suspended or removed from the Platform.
What happens when the rules are broken
- Restriction. You can keep talking to contacts and groups you have already used, but you cannot start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add members or use linked devices. WhatsApp says people engaging in spam, automated or bulk messaging could be banned.
- Ban. The message This phone number can't use WhatsApp offers a review. WhatsApp names spam, scams and risks to users' safety as reasons. If no review option appears, the ban is final.
- The Terms. WhatsApp may modify, suspend or terminate access at any time, for example if you break the letter or spirit of the Terms.
- Business accounts. The Business app terms say WhatsApp may limit, throttle, suspend or terminate an account depending on the breach. After a termination, the business agrees not to create another business account without express written permission.
How to stay inside the rules
- Use only the official apps: the phone app, WhatsApp for Windows or Mac, and WhatsApp Web. The Help Center lists several well-known modified apps by name as unofficial.
- One phone number you control per account. Keep the number active; WhatsApp ties the account to it.
- Put business use on a business product. That means the Business app or the Business Platform. See the business access guide.
- Message people who expect it. The responsible-use page says to message contacts who contacted you first or asked to be reached on WhatsApp, to get permission before adding people to groups, and to remove contacts who ask you to stop.
- Do not automate or harvest. No bulk, auto-messaging or auto-dialling, and no automated extraction of information from WhatsApp for purposes it has not permitted.
- Keep access personal. The Terms make you responsible for keeping your device and account safe. Never share the 6-digit registration code, and link only devices you control.
If your account is restricted or banned
- Read the message. A restriction lifts by itself; the time left shows when you open a new chat with someone you have never messaged.
- For a ban, use the review option in the app. Stay with that route: after an account is disabled or suspended, the Terms say you agree "not to create another account without our permission".
- If you ever used an unofficial app, remove it first. WhatsApp recommends uninstalling unofficial versions before installing the official app, and warns that history backed up in them may not transfer.
- If the problem is a sign-out rather than a ban, the sign-out guide covers it.
Where ADSSPEED fits
ADSSPEED is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that manages many browser profiles. Each profile keeps its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so accounts you manage can stay signed in side by side without signing each other out. Profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, and profile data stays on your own computer. ADSSPEED does not change how many accounts WhatsApp allows, what its Terms prohibit, or how WhatsApp enforces them. Use only accounts you own or are authorised to manage. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
Can WhatsApp have 2 accounts?
Yes, in documented forms. WhatsApp's Help Center says its multiple account feature allows two different accounts on a single mobile device, that the second needs a separate phone number, and that the maximum is two. It also says you can run WhatsApp and the WhatsApp Business app together if each is linked to a different number.
Can WhatsApp Business have multiple accounts?
WhatsApp says account switching isn't currently available on the WhatsApp Business app. The Business app and WhatsApp can sit on one phone, but each account must be linked to a different phone number, and one number cannot serve both apps at once.
What is the maximum number of WhatsApp accounts?
The pages read for this guide give one limit: two accounts on one phone. They set no total for how many accounts a person may own, but each account can only be verified with one registered phone number, so every extra account needs its own number.
Why was my WhatsApp account banned?
WhatsApp's Help Center says an account may be banned if its activity violates the Terms of Service, for example spam, scams, or putting users' safety at risk. Its responsible-use page also lists bulk, automated or auto-dialled messaging, and its unofficial-apps page covers modified or imitation versions of WhatsApp.
How do I appeal a WhatsApp account ban?
When a ban message appears, WhatsApp offers a review of that number in the app, and says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. If no review option appears, WhatsApp says the ban is final and cannot be appealed. Do not start a new account to carry on.
What does WhatsApp account limited or restricted mean?
WhatsApp describes a restriction as temporary: you can still talk to people you have already exchanged chats or calls with, but you cannot start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add members or use linked devices. The restriction message shows how long it lasts.
