Imgur Login Problem: Why It Asks for Your Username or a Code, and What a Ban Means

By ADSSPEED Team · Published · Updated · 6 min read

Why does Imgur keep asking for your username or a verification code?

Because of one of three things that Imgur's own pages describe. According to Imgur's Privacy Policy and Community Rules (read 3 October 2026), a browser that blocks cookies makes you type your username at every login, setting up an account involves a text-message confirmation code for your cell phone number, and breaking the Rules can lead to a warning, a 24-hour suspension or a ban. The pages describe no new-device check, no location check and no two-step sign-in.

The documents do not say which device they apply to, and the apps page lists only an iPhone app and an Android app, so read this guide as describing imgur.com in a browser.

Which symptom points to which cause?

What you seeWhat Imgur's pages sayWhat to do
Imgur asks for your username at every loginWith cookies blocked, you must type it each time (Privacy Policy)Allow cookies for imgur.com in that profile and check what clears them
A text message with a code while you set up an accountThe code lets Imgur check that the cell phone number is yours (Privacy Policy)Enter the code sent to your own number; if it does not arrive, ask Imgur's help site

A 24-hour suspensionWarnings add up when several submissions break the rules in a short time (Rules)Wait for it to end, or appeal if you think it was a mistake
A banThe account's content may be deleted and the user's access to Imgur lost (Rules)Appeal through the Appeal Form if you believe it was an error

What is the phone-number code for?

The Privacy Policy has a section titled "Why do I have to verify my phone number?" It explains that setting up an account starts with your cell phone number and that Imgur texts you a confirmation code so it can check the number is yours. According to the policy, Imgur does not keep the number, share it, sell it or show it to anyone. It turns the number into a one-way hash and keeps only the hash.

The same section adds that if you are banned for breaking the rules, your hash is banned too, so the same number cannot be used to set up another account. The policy ties the code to setting up an account and describes no code at later logins, and it does not say how many accounts one number may verify. The page shows an effective date of 22 January 2024 for its privacy-rights text, so check the live wording.

What can a warning, suspension or ban involve?

  • Who decides. The Rules say Imgur enforces them with both human moderators and automated tools, and that moderators who review reported content weigh context and intent. Some actions are applied automatically, including banning accounts detected as spam and suspending or banning accounts that reach the warning limit.
  • The usual path. Rule-breaking content is removed and the original poster warned. Warnings fade over time, but several breaches close together can add up to a 24-hour suspension and then a ban. Serious violations, such as illegal content and content that condones violence, may bring a ban at once with no earlier warning. The rules guide sets this out as a table.
  • What a ban can bring. According to the Rules, the account's content may be deleted, the user may lose access to Imgur, and websites that hotlink to Imgur against the Terms may be blocked. The pages do not say whether that reaches other accounts the same person holds, how long a ban lasts, or whether deleted content can be restored.
  • Copyright. The Terms say that if Imgur identifies you as a repeat infringer, it will block or remove your images and terminate any accounts you have with it.

How do you appeal an Imgur decision?

If you think Imgur made the wrong call on your content, your account or something you reported, the Rules let you appeal at no charge through the Appeal Form.

  1. Write down what happened and which rule you think was misapplied.
  2. Open the Appeal Form linked from the Rules page and appeal the decision about your content, your account or the content you reported.
  3. If you are in the EU, note the timing: the Rules give people in the EU 6 months from the decision to appeal. They also say a dispute may go to a certified out-of-court settlement body or to the courts, or be raised with the Digital Services Coordinator in your member state.
  4. Read the Moderation and Reporting FAQ, which the Rules point to for more about how moderation and reporting work.
  5. Do not open another account while you wait. The Rules treat opening accounts again and again to get round a punishment or restriction as prohibited.

What if the code, the prompt or the appeal goes nowhere?

  • You cannot sign in at all. None of the three documents covers password resets or sign-in errors. Use Imgur's help site and describe exactly what you see.
  • The code never arrives. The Privacy Policy describes the text message but gives no troubleshooting, so ask Imgur's help site.
  • The username prompt returns even with cookies allowed. Look for a setting or extension that clears cookies. If you use several accounts, one browser profile per account keeps each account's cookies apart; Chrome Help says profiles keep bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings separate. If the idea is new, read what a browser profile is; the profiles guide has the steps.
  • An appeal gets no reply. The Rules give no response time. Contact Imgur through its help site, and do not open a replacement account.

Where ADSSPEED fits

ADSSPEED changes none of the checks described above. It is a Windows and macOS desktop app that manages many browser profiles, each with its own cookies, local data and browser settings, so accounts you own or are authorised to manage can remain signed in side by side without signing each other out. Profiles can be opened, stopped and organised in bulk, and the data stays on your own computer. Setup is described in installing ADSSPEED on Windows. ADSSPEED is not affiliated with Imgur.

Frequently asked questions

Imgur login problem: why does it keep asking for my username?

The Privacy Policy names one cause: if cookies are blocked, you must type your username again at every login. Allow cookies for imgur.com in the browser profile you use for that account, and check that no setting or extension clears them.

Why does Imgur send a verification code when I set up an account?

According to the Privacy Policy, setting up an account starts with your cell phone number, and Imgur texts a code so it can check the number is yours. It says Imgur keeps only a one-way hash of the number, not the number itself.

Why was my Imgur account banned for no reason?

The Rules say Imgur uses both human moderators and automated tools, and that some actions are applied automatically, such as banning accounts detected as spam or suspending and banning accounts that reach the warning limit. The pages do not explain individual decisions, so if you believe yours was a mistake, use the Appeal Form, which the Rules say costs nothing.

How do I appeal an Imgur ban?

Use the Appeal Form linked from the Rules page. The Rules let you appeal, at no charge, a decision about your content, your account or something you reported, and they give people in the EU 6 months from the decision to do so.

What happens to my pictures if my Imgur account is banned?

According to the Rules, a ban can also mean the account's content is deleted, the user loses access to Imgur and websites that hotlink to Imgur against the Terms are blocked. The pages do not say how long a ban lasts.

What does Imgur say about my phone number if my account is banned?

The Privacy Policy says that if you are banned for breaking the rules, the hash of your number is banned too, so the same number cannot be used to set up another account. A ban is something to appeal through the Appeal Form, not something to work around.
