Why Does Threads Keep Logging Me Out or Refuse to Let Me Log In?
Why does Threads keep logging me out or ask me to log in again?
Meta's pages give a short list of causes, and the first is easy to miss on a computer: the Help Center's steps for switching profiles on Threads.com start with Menu and Log out, so logging in as a second profile ends the first one's session. The others are a password change, a login code, lost recovery details, a disabled profile, and activity you did not make. Meta's pages do not list every trigger for a check, so this guide does not guess.
The causes Meta's pages name, side by side
The middle column paraphrases Meta's pages as they stood on 3 October 2026.
| Symptom | What Meta's pages say | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Signed out right after switching profiles on a computer | The Help Center's computer steps for switching are Menu, Log out, then log in with the other username and password | Log in as the profile you want, or give each account its own browser profile |
| Signed out of every device after a password change | Whenever you change your password, any devices logged in to your account are logged out automatically and you must sign in again | Sign in with the new password. If you did not make the change, use step 5 below |
| A login code is requested | If two-factor authentication is on for Threads and a code cannot be sent, a backup code completes the login | Use a backup code. Get them before you need them |
| You cannot reach your recovery email or phone | If you cannot access the email or phone you registered with, and the Threads account was not in the same Accounts Center as your other profiles, Meta says it cannot give you access | Log in if you still can, then change the email or phone in Accounts Center |
| A message at login says the profile is disabled | Accounts that don't follow the Community Standards may be disabled, and you may be able to ask for a review | Open the app, enter your username and password, follow the on-screen steps |
| Posts or comments you did not write | The Help Center says your password may be compromised | Follow step 5 below |
| An error that says Try again later | The Help Center names one cause: inauthentic activity detected on the account. It does not call this the only cause | Check Account Status and step 5, and do not assume |
| Password reset or two-factor setup will not open on a computer | The Help Center pages for recovering or changing a Threads password and for two-factor setup say the feature isn't available on computers | Use the Threads app or a mobile browser |
How a Threads login is tied to Instagram or Facebook
The Help Center says a Threads profile is connected to the Instagram or Facebook account it was created with. Its settings table lists password, two-factor authentication and saved login as settings you can manage in Threads, Instagram or Facebook, and says they affect Threads and Instagram for profiles created with an Instagram account, or Facebook and Threads for profiles created with a Facebook account. In practice:
- A change to the password or two-factor setup behind a profile changes the login you use at Threads.
- The Help Center also says you can create a new password just for Threads, so check which one you set.
- For a profile created with a Facebook profile, the backup-code page says to visit Facebook to update details such as your email address, phone number and password.
- Meta lists login alerts, login activity and where you're logged in under Password and security in Accounts Center. Menus vary, because people are gradually moved to Meta Accounts.
- For a profile created with an Instagram account, Meta advises turning on login requests, which send an alert whenever someone tries to access the account.
Why a shared computer makes it worse
- One browser profile holds one sign-in at a time. Chromium's documentation puts cookies in the data stored per profile, so logging in as profile B inside the same browser profile replaces A's session. A tab still open for A can then show you as logged out.
- Shared computers. Meta's security tips say to log out of your profile when you use a computer you share and never to share your password.
Getting back in: a step-by-step route
- Type threads.com into the address bar instead of following a link in a message. Meta says it never sends direct messages about your account in its apps, sends security messages only to your email address, and tells you not to click suspicious links.
- Log in with the credentials the profile was created with, your Instagram or Facebook login, or with the Threads-only password if you set one.
- If a code is requested, enter it. If a code cannot be sent, use a backup code. Meta's backup-code page gives this computer route for the Instagram side: instagram.com, More, Settings, Meta Account, Login and security, Two-factor authentication, Additional methods, Backup codes. You must be logged in to see them.
- If you forgot the password, use the Threads app or a mobile browser, because the Help Center says the recovery and change pages are not available on computers.
- If you think someone else has access, follow Meta's checklist for a profile that posts things you did not write: change the password or send yourself a reset email, revoke suspicious third-party apps, turn on two-factor authentication, check that your email address and phone number are right, and check Accounts Center for linked accounts you do not recognise. If you are locked out, Meta points to instagram.com/hacked in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Check Account Status. On a computer, click Menu in the bottom left, then Settings, then Account Status. It lists removed content and features you can no longer use, and offers Request a review.
When nothing above works
- Account Recovery Hub. Meta publishes a hub for Facebook, Instagram and Threads, a sensible next stop when the steps above do not work.
- Lost email or phone. The Help Center says to ask your email provider for help, because Threads cannot get you back into an email account. Failing that, you must still be able to reach your Threads settings, directly or by logging in with another account in the same Accounts Center, so you can change the email address or phone number there.
- A disabled profile. Ask for a review by opening the app, entering your username and password and following the on-screen instructions. If you see no disabled message, the Help Center says you may have a login issue instead.
- A removed profile. The Help Center says that if your account was removed for violating the Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up again with the same Instagram or Facebook account.
Where ADSSPEED fits
A log-out in one browser profile does not touch another, because each profile in ADSSPEED holds its own cookies, local data and browser settings. That helps when several accounts you manage are open at once on a Windows or macOS computer, and each account can always be opened from the same profile. A proxy can be set per profile or assigned to many in bulk, and the data stays on your own computer. ADSSPEED does not remove or influence Meta's checks, and it is not affiliated with Threads.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Threads keep logging me out?
Meta's pages name a short list rather than one cause. On a computer, switching profiles starts with a log-out. A password change signs out every device, a login code may be required, recovery details may be lost, a profile may be disabled, or activity you did not make may point to a password problem. The pages do not list every trigger for a check.
Why can't I log in to Threads with Instagram?
A Threads profile signs in with the Instagram or Facebook account it was created with, unless you set a password just for Threads. Check which login you used and that the underlying account itself works. The Help Center's Threads password-recovery page is for the app and mobile browsers, not computers.
How do I reset my Threads password?
The Help Center's page on recovering a Threads password says the feature isn't available on computers, only in the Threads app or a mobile browser. Use one of those. If you cannot get in, Meta's Account Recovery Hub covers Facebook, Instagram and Threads.
What does it mean when a Threads account is restricted?
Threads' Account Status page says that repeatedly posting content that is removed for going against the Community Standards can cost you features or access, and that in most cases you get a warning first. On a computer, click Menu, then Settings, then Account Status, and use Request a review if you think a removal was wrong.
What should I do when Threads says something went wrong at login?
The pages read for this guide do not explain that exact message. The Help Center does name one cause for a different error, Try again later: inauthentic activity detected on the account, which it does not call the only cause. Check Account Status, type threads.com yourself, try the Threads app, and use the Account Recovery Hub if you are still locked out.
Should I log out of Threads on a shared computer?
Yes. Meta's security tips say to log out of your profile when you use a computer you share with other people, and never to share your password.
